I am a Miami-based Colombian painter working with textiles and mixed media, incorporating materials such as silk, paper, alabaster, porcelain, light, and natural elements. Drawing from both psychology and art, I investigate tropical vegetation, organic forms, and the forces that shape living systems.
Through recurring motifs such as wild animals, orchids, roots, birds, water, and flowing forms, I investigate transformation, fragility, interdependence, and the delicate balance between control and coexistence. Through my work, I consider ecological awareness, adaptation, and the tension between beauty and threatened freedom.
Having lived between different cultures and countries, I often reflect on migration, identity, belonging, and cultural memory. These experiences shape the visual language of my work and inspire my exploration of the relationships between people, place, and the environment.
Through texture, gesture, and layered forms, I explore ancestral connection, emotional inheritance, and recurring patterns of adaptation that shape both human experience and the natural world.
By bringing together fragile and enduring elements, I create contemplative spaces where vulnerability, vigilance, and adaptation coexist.
Soy una pintora colombiana residente en Miami que trabaja con textiles y técnicas mixtas, incorporando materiales como seda, papel, alabastro, porcelana, luz y elementos naturales. A partir de la psicología y el arte, investigo la vegetación tropical, las formas orgánicas y las fuerzas que moldean los sistemas vivos.
A través de motivos recurrentes como animales salvajes, orquídeas, raíces, aves, agua y formas fluidas, investigo la transformación, la fragilidad, la interdependencia y el delicado equilibrio entre el control y la coexistencia. En mi obra, reflexiono sobre la conciencia ecológica, la adaptación y la tensión entre la belleza y la libertad amenazada.
Habiendo vivido entre diferentes culturas y países, a menudo reflexiono sobre la migración, la identidad, la pertenencia y la memoria cultural. Estas experiencias dan forma al lenguaje visual de mi obra e inspiran mi exploración de las relaciones entre las personas, el lugar y el entorno.
A través de la textura, el gesto y las formas superpuestas, exploro la conexión ancestral, la herencia emocional y los patrones recurrentes de adaptación que moldean tanto la experiencia humana como el mundo natural.
Al reunir elementos frágiles y duraderos, creo espacios contemplativos donde coexisten la vulnerabilidad, la vigilancia y la adaptación.
Ana Tamayo is a Colombian-born painter based in Miami whose practice incorporates textiles and mixed media.
Tamayo's paintings are rooted in observations of the natural world and the intricate relationships that connect living systems. Rhizomes, plants, birds, insects, and waterways recur throughout her practice, not as illustrations of the environment but as points of reflection on migration, memory, belonging, and the fragile interdependence of living systems.
Having grown up in Colombia, Ana Tamayo questions her cultural and ancestral inheritance and the meaning of her experience as a woman in a patriarchal society. Through weaving, repetition, and materials such as alabaster, porcelain, silk, and light, she examines the traces of what is passed from one generation to the next—what remains, what needs to change, and what endures.
Her background in psychology informs her work, shaping an interest in the symbolic, the unconscious, and the stories carried beneath the surface of everyday life.
Tamayo studied painting, drawing, and mixed media at the Boca Raton Museum of Art School, Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, FL, and the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. Her artistic practice is further informed by studies in psychology in the United States, Mexico, and Colombia.
Tamayo has exhibited internationally, with recent group exhibitions presented in group shows by the Contemporary Artists Association at Art GENTEN at the National Art Center, Tokyo; at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum; at the Cornell Art Museum in Delray Beach, Florida; and at the Centro de la Felicidad in Bogotá, Colombia. Her latest solo exhibition, The Jaguar's Journey, was presented at the Pompano Beach Library and Cultural Center in Florida.
Tamayo is represented by Gallery Biba in Palm Beach, Florida, as well as by Espacio Permanente and Galería Otros 360° in Bogotá, Colombia.
Ana Tamayo es una pintora nacida en Colombia y radicada en Miami cuya práctica incorpora textiles y técnicas mixtas.
Las pinturas de Tamayo están arraigadas en observaciones del mundo natural y en las complejas relaciones que conectan a los sistemas vivos. Rizomas, plantas, aves, insectos y cursos de agua son recurrentes en toda su práctica, no como ilustraciones del medio ambiente sino como puntos de reflexión sobre la migración, la memoria, la pertenencia y la frágil interdependencia de los sistemas vivos.
Habiendo crecido en Colombia, Ana Tamayo cuestiona su herencia cultural y ancestral, así como el significado de su experiencia como mujer en una sociedad patriarcal. A través del tejido, la repetición y materiales como el alabastro, la porcelana, la seda y la luz, examina los rastros de lo que se transmite de una generación a otra: lo que permanece, lo que necesita cambiar y lo que perdura.
Su formación en psicología informa su trabajo, perfilando un interés por lo simbólico, lo inconsciente y las historias que se llevan bajo la superficie de la vida cotidiana.
Tamayo estudió pintura, dibujo y técnicas mixtas en la escuela de arte del Boca Raton Museum of Art, la Universidad de Florida Atlantic en Boca Raton, Florida, y la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Su práctica artística se complementa además con estudios de psicología en los Estados Unidos, México y Colombia.
Tamayo ha expuesto internacionalmente; sus exposiciones colectivas recientes incluyen muestras de la Asociación de Artistas Contemporáneos en Art GENTEN en el Centro Nacional de Arte de Tokio; en el Museo de Arte Metropolitano de Tokio; en el Cornell Art Museum en Delray Beach, Florida; y en el Centro de la Felicidad en Bogotá, Colombia. Su exposición individual más reciente, The Jaguar's Journey, se presentó en la Biblioteca y Centro Cultural de Pompano Beach en Florida.
